Bharatanatyam is an Indian classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam expresses South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism and in general of Hinduism and Jainism. This dance form combines the three Natya, Nritta and Nritya. The performance repertoire of Bharatanatyam, like other classical dances, includes nrita (pure dance), nritya (Conveys a meaning to the audience through hand gestures) and natya (Consists of the elements of drama). The dance form includes graceful and tender movements of the body in an artistic and elegant way.Bharatanatyam word was derived by joining two Sanskrit words: 'Natyam' meaning dance and 'Bharata' which is a mnemonic containing 'Bha' (bhava/emotions), 'Ra' (raga/melody), and 'Ta' (tala/rhythm). Thus the term Bharatanatyam means a dance that expresses Bhava, Raga, and Tala.Bharatanatyam style is noted for its fixed upper torso, bent legs, and flexed knees (Aramandi) combined with footwork, and a vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hands, eyes, and face muscles. It has a great impact on the history and tradition.Hence this dance could only be learned under the proper guidance of an expert teacher.
